Monde Bala

Monde Bala is the Interim Chief Executive Officer of the National Transmission Company South Africa (NTCSA), a position he assumed on 1 August 2025. Before this, he served as Group Executive for the Distribution Division of Eskom Holdings SOC Ltd, leading one of the largest and most complex electricity distribution networks on the African continent.

With over two decades of experience in the energy sector, Monde is recognised as a thought leader in transforming South Africa’s electricity industry. His leadership has been central to Eskom’s strategic repositioning amid an evolving energy landscape shaped by decarbonisation, decentralisation, digitalisation, and democratisation. He has driven significant financial and operational improvements across the business while aligning electricity industry strategies with global energy trends and South Africa’s unique developmental priorities.

Having worked across the full electricity value chain, he holds a deep appreciation for both the technical systems that power the nation and the people who ensure the lights stay on. He regards the NTCSA’s mandate – to provide reliable, fair and affordable access to the electricity grid and market to enable sustainable, inclusive economic growth – as essential to both the country’s energy future and its broader socio-economic development.

Combining strategic vision with hands-on operational experience, he leads with a collaborative and solutions-driven approach. His expertise spans network operations, engineering, and project delivery, with a focus on driving innovation, accelerating renewable energy integration, and fostering a sustainable, resilient power sector that supports South Africa’s energy transition. Monde is a registered Professional Engineer (Pr Eng) and holds a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from the University of Cape Town, as well as a Master of Industrial Engineering degree from the University of the Witwatersrand.
