The International Trader: To participate in markets as a buyer and seller (Trader) within the Southern African Power Pool (SAPP) including the import and export of electricity from and to utilities and IPPs connected to the SAPP network.

1. Transmission Network Service Provider (TNSP)

Network Solutions Development

  • To develop optimal plans and solutions for the expansion and refurbishment of the power transmission network as well as providing a technology and asset management service to ensure that the integrated power system is reliable, adequate and secure.

Network Solutions Development

  • To execute projects related to the capital expansion, strengthening and refurbishment of transmission assets as well as construction management of transmission networks required for the integration of new generators and loads.

Network OMR

  • To ensure a reliable and sustainable transmission network through operating, maintaining and commissioning of new assets.

2.  System Operator

  • To control the operation of and be responsible for the short-term reliability of the interconnected power system (IPS) as defined in the South African Grid Code (SAGC)

  • To ensure a reliable and sustainable telecommunication network for Eskom through planning, expanding, operating, maintaining and refurbishing.

3.  Market Operator / PCA

  • To facilitate the market to sign long term PPA with generators and sell energy at regulated tariffs and prices.

Market Operator

  • To operator and/or facilitate the market and administer the market participants. To conduct market clearing, settlements and invoicing. To ensure that no risk taking in buying and selling.

The Integrated Risk Management function provides guidance on and monitors the implementation and maintenance of the company’s risk management framework and the adoption of best practices in risk management to improve NTCSA’s level of maturity towards a “risk-intelligent” organisation.
